The F.G. Clark Activity Center was filled with energy Saturday afternoon as Southern University hosted Bethune-Cookman in its final home basketball game of the season. Senior Day celebrations highlighted the doubleheader, with Southern’s women delivering a huge victory while the men’s team battled it out, ultimately falling short.
Women’s Basketball Dominates on Senior Day
Southern’s women’s basketball team closed out its home schedule defeating Bethune-Cookman 73–47 in front of an energized home crowd. The Jaguars controlled the game from the opening tip, showcasing massive skill that kept the Wildcats on their toes throughout the game.
The win marked a meaningful moment for the program as Southern honored eight seniors for their contributions both on and off the court: D’Shantae Edwards, Jaylia Reed, Kiana Wilson, Xyllize Harrison, Demonnie Lagway, Olivia Delancy, and team managers Jade Blount and Kavyon Harris.
Senior, Jaylia Reed helped lead the offensive effort, finishing with 14 points while providing steady leadership during key stretches of the game.
The celebratory atmosphere extended beyond the court. Fans in the F.G. Clark Activity Center, with sections of the crowd dancing in the bleachers as the Jaguars ran down the court. The victory served as both a strong performance and an emotional sendoff for the senior class in their final appearance on Southern’s home floor.
Men’s Basketball Falls in Competitive Contest
In the evening matchup, Southern’s men’s basketball team fought hard but came up just short against Bethune-Cookman. Despite strong individual performances and stretches of momentum, the Jaguars were unable to secure the win.
Cam Amboree delivered an outstanding performance, leading Southern with 21 points while adding nine assists and two steals. Amboree controlled the game, creating scoring opportunities for both himself and his teammates throughout the contest.
Terrance Dixon Jr. contributed 14 points and eight rebounds, providing physical play inside the paint, while Michael Jacobs added 12 points, seven rebounds, and five assists in a balanced effort for the Jaguars.
Saturday’s doubleheader marked the end of the Jaguars’ home schedule, sending both programs into the final stretch of the season. For the seniors, the day represented a celebration of their collegiate careers defined by dedication, growth, and pride in representing Southern University and A&M College.
With postseason play approaching, both teams now turn their focus to finishing the season strong and carrying the energy of Senior Day into the weeks ahead.
