The Southern Jaguars entered Sunday’s finale against the Morehead State Eagles with a chance to complete a three-game sweep. After earning a 5-3 victory on Friday and a 10-8 win on Saturday, Southern was poised to finish the weekend undefeated. Instead, the Jaguars came up just short, falling 8-7 in a back-and-forth contest.
Southern held a 4-3 lead entering the fifth inning and continued to rely on steady defense to protect its advantage. Kenyon Hughes #2 made key plays in the field, including a clean catch and strong throw to Jaylon Lucky at first base to record crucial outs and keep the Eagles from gaining momentum. In the bottom half of the inning, Ryan Hunter #12 delivered a double to left field and later scored on a sacrifice fly, extending the Jaguars’ lead to 5-3.
The Jaguars created more separation in the sixth inning. After Beny Bikar drew a walk and Hughes reached base, Kameron Byrd #20 advanced the runners with a hit. Jaylon Lucky followed with a clutch hit to left field, driving in two runs and pushing Southern ahead 7-4. At that point, the sweep appeared well within reach.
However, Morehead State capitalized on defensive miscues in the late innings. The Eagles narrowed the gap to 7-5 in the seventh inning and used a combination of walks and errors in the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. Despite a pitching change aimed at slowing the rally, Southern was unable to regain control.
In the top of the ninth, the Eagles completed the comeback. A series of base runners and another costly error allowed the go-ahead run to score, giving Morehead State its first lead of the afternoon at 8-7. Southern had one final opportunity in the bottom of the ninth, but a flyout and two consecutive outs sealed the loss.
Following the game, Kennedy Drexler #1 acknowledged a shift in momentum compared to the first two games of the series. He noted that early success may have led to complacency as the game progressed and emphasized the need for consistent energy from start to finish. Drexler added that maintaining a steady routine throughout the week would help translate into stronger performances on the field.
Although Southern was unable to secure the sweep, the Jaguars claimed the series with two wins out of three games. The narrow loss serves as a reminder of the importance of defensive discipline and sustained intensity as the team prepares for its next matchup.
