After suffering a hard 13-point loss to Alcorn State University, the Southern Lady Jaguars were determined to execute a vicious comeback in Thursday night’s matchup against the Alabama Hornets, who entered the game riding the momentum of a recent win.
Both teams came out strong in the opening quarter, but Southern’s came through with a 16–13 lead. The Jaguars shot (43%) from the field, but their three pointers (25%) and the free-throw line (50%) gave them a competitive start during this quarter.
Southern’s defense was lack lustered in the first half, allowing the Hornets to reach (41%) shootings. Despite this, Southern attempted to get back in the lead with field goal shots (33%), three pointers increasing by half (50%) and couldn’t get to the free throws line, the score tightened, 27–30 by halftime.
In the second half, Southern came back from halftime struggling to find their momentum. The Jaguars shot (23%) from the field and three pointers by (33%). Still with no chance of achieving a free throw. By the end of the third quarter, they had setback their lead to 38–45.
Southern’s defense picked up their hunger from last quarter. They increased their field goal by almost half (40%) and a small increase by five (37%) from the three-point line. Despite some lapses in rebounding, the Jaguars closed out the game with a 61–57 loss.
Jocelyn Tate contributed to defense with 9 rebounds and 12 points. Zaria Hurston also provided the scoring effort with 9 points and 6 rebounds.
The Lady Jaguars will look to make a comeback into their next challenge against Alabama and A&M University at F.G. Clark Activity Center on February 7, 2026, for 2:30 p.m.
