SWAC Player of the Week Chris Davis finished with 20 points, six rebounds and a steal, but it was not enough as Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated Southern 60-52 at the F.G. Clark Center in Baton Rouge.
UAPB shot 37.5 percent in the first half as it jumped out to an eight-point lead, 32-24. UAPB’s Jarvis Gunter had eight points, five rebounds and two steals in the period while Joe Holliday led Southern with nine points and two steals. The Golden Lions were assisted in the half with a 23-16 rebounding advantage and a 7-2 margin on second-chance points.
In the second, both teams found their struggles from the field. Turnovers were few in the period as were made shots from the field: Southern made 9-of-25 while UAPB made 9-of-28 attempts.
For Southern (8-15, 6-6), Joe Holliday had 14 points, three rebounds and two steals while Barry Honore’ had seven points and two blocks.
For Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-12, 7-5), Larry Williams had 14 points and four assists while William Byrd had 11 points, four rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Gunter finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and two steals for the Golden Lions.
