Southern University students seeking extra financial aid are in luck.
The John B. Cade Library has information that may help students looking for extra scholarship funding in the upcoming years.
One such scholarship, the Leo and Emma Amar Will Scholarship, has awarded over $10,000 to deserving college students since its establishment.
The scholarship fund was founded in 1990, by eight of Leo and Emma Amar’s children, who were graduates of Southern, to honor their parents’ strong belief and respect of higher education. The fund is a private, non-profit organization.
Mr. and Mrs. Amar were residents of Pointe Coupee Parish, and were concerned about the youth and their pursuit of higher education. The two $500 awards require that applicants be either an attending Southern student or graduating high school senior, with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or a 2.5 GPA with significant community service involvement. The award also requires an official transcript, and three letters of recommendation to be submitted directly to the selection committee.
“The scholarship is open to any Southern Students, or high school graduate,” said Angela Proctor of the Archives Department. “The scholarship was set up by the Amar children, all of whom were Southern graduates. Initially, two scholarships were given out, one to a Pointe Coupee Parish resident, and the other to another qualified candidate, but for the past two years, both awards have gone to Pointe Coupee residents.”
The Will family’s desire is that the fund continues to “flourish and contribute to the ongoing success of this great institution of higher education, Southern University,” per the fund’s explanation and requirements.
The deadline to apply for the Leo and Emma Amar Will Scholarship is April 30.
Minority scholarships that have been donated by companies and organizations have been returned due to lack of interest, according to the John B. Cade Library. Such scholarships include popular companies such as McDonald’s and Tylenol and Coca Cola. The complete four page scholarship listings, in addition to the Leo and Emma Will Scholarship may be picked up from the Archives Department on the third floor, Information Desk and the Reference Department, respectively, of the library.
