The Southern University women track team finished third, with 95.5 points, while the SU men placed fourth for the fourth straight season with 98.5 points at the 2008 SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, LA. The SU program had three wins Sunday, all in the field: Jason House in the men’s high jump, Earldreka White in the women’s triple jump and Jovanni Jenkins with a tie for first in the men’s pole vault.
The Southern Jaguars were without head coach Johnny Thomas, who remains out on medical leave.
“We were pleased with the women. They did what was expected of them. Their times improved. Many qualified for regionals. As a team, we came together,” said SU assistant track coach Tinnequp Lightfoot-Ross.
SU assistant Gregory Thompson, who works with many of the track performers said, “The ladies ran faster the whole day. On the men’s side, the individual efforts were pretty good. The people we knew could qualify came in and got the job done. We could have done better on the men’s side. We had our ups and downs, but it was an OK meet.”
White, second in the long jump behind teammate India Anderson, set a personal best with her triple jump of 40-6ø Monday.
Jenkins tied Brewer, who was last year’s champ. Jenkins also finished fourth in the decathlon.
