The first annual National Wear Red Day will take place tomorrow. Southern University is asking that faculty and the student body to wear red and support the fight against heart disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, and more than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2008 were in men.”
The National Wear Red Day hopes to promote awareness of a condition that affects American communities.
One person who is taking a strong stand against heart disease is Ashley Hebert, Miss Black Louisiana USA 2012, she will be hosting the first annual Red Day/Celebrity Date Auction in Baton Rouge on tonight at 600 Main beginning at 8 PM.
“In 2010, coronary heart disease alone was projected to cost the United States $108.9 billion. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications, and lost productivity,” the CDC website said.
Heart disease is a leading cause of death among African Americans, Hispanics, and Whites.
Even our very own Chisolu Isiadinso, Miss Southern 2011-12, is showing her support by participating in the auction.
“My goal is to assist Miss Black Louisiana USA by making sure she reaches her goal and helping make sure that the people in our community are informed,” said Isiadinso.
According to the CDC, “Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease. In 2008, 405,309 people died from coronary heart disease.”
The auction is open to the public but they are requesting a $10 participation fee. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Baton Rouge American Heart Association and expenses to send Ashley Hebert, Miss Black Louisiana USA 2012 to compete in the national Miss Black USA pageant.
Some of the celebrities to be auctioned off are: R&B Songstress, Princess Denisia, U4ria lead singer, Arianne “The Creole Cutie”, Author of “20 Thoughts Every Woman Should Have”, Christy “CeCe” Chapman, New Orleans Bodybuilder and Fitness guru, Kodi Davis, Former Cincinnati Bengals Captain & President of the Ky Cares Foundation, Ky Hebert, 2005 New England Patriots Superbowl Champion, Eric Alexander, 2009 San Diego Chargers NFL Draft, Demetrius Byrd, and many more.
Isiadinso added, “I hope that Southern University will come out and support a good cause and help the community stay informed.”
When asked what she expected and how she felt about being auctioned, Isiadinso responded “I hope I don’t go for $5, and I hope the person who buys me is someone I know. All the money is for a good cause.”
Show support in the fight against heart disease by wearing anything red.
Prevention starts with everyone. Protect yourself and your loved ones from heart disease and stroke by understanding the risks and taking action against heart disease.
