In the previous season, Southern University’s football team battled to the wire against Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Alabama with their 35-34 victory.
However, that victory was not to be taken lightly.
On Saturday, November 14 Southern crushed Alabama A&M under their paws with a 46-7 victory during senior night, with high school watching the historical numbers.
The offense and defense played both cylinders during this game following the 59-24 blowout game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff the previous week.
On senior night, redshirt junior running back Lenard Tillery broke the all-time rushing record after bursting through the side for a 39-yard touchdown when Southern led 39-7 before halftime.
Baton Rouge native Tillery, from McKinley High School went 10 carries for 116 yards when he broke the record and ended the game with 127 rushing yards.
He is now the all-time leading rusher at Southern University with 3,050 yards in his junior year, which he surpassed Steve Wofford during his stint at 1997-1998 for his consecutive 1,000 yard season.
Wofford, in three years at Southern University posted 3,015 rushing yards.
Tillery has a year left in the program and can shatter the rushing record.
“It wasn’t simple,” said Tillery, “Most of the hard part happens off of the field, but if you preserve, take care of what you’ve got to do in class and get to Saturday, you’ll be alright.”
Tillery went into his fifth consecutive 100-yard game. It was one of his achievements on Saturday’s game.
Austin Howard went 21-27 and compiled 312 passing yards with two touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns before he was subbed out for sophomore quarterback, Deonte Shorts with a score of 46-7 in the third quarter.
Playing on his final night at A.W. Mumford , senior running back, Malcolm Crockett scored early with a 26 yard touchdown and then Howard emulated the rush game and capped a 4 yard run leading 13-0.
Jonathan Dorsey took the 11 yard pass for a touchdown that would be their last score of the game.
The second quarter became the dominant quarter for Southern as junior, wide receiver Randall Menard accessed the 23 yard pass for the next touchdown. Following was Crockett’s second touchdown with a short 3 yard run. Tillery set historical records after bursting from the side for a 39 yard touchdown. Menard once again caught his second touchdown pass from Howard to excel 39-7 19 seconds before halftime.
Howard took his next chance at the goal line for the quarterback keep and scored the last touchdown of the night ended the scoring drive 46-7.
Besides the heavy offensive effort, Southern’s defense only allowed a single touchdown and low yardage from the opposition.
The defense once again puts a stop to the scoring drive.
Bulldogs quarterback, Damion May went 3-10 and 28 yards with a single touchdown and running back Byran Brower only went 29 yards.
Senior defensive tackle, Gabe Echols leads the defense with six total tackles, sophomore linebacker, Aaron Tiller had five tackles and three sacks which costed 20 yards for the Bulldogs and freshman defensive back Andrea Augustine also claimed five tackles.
Echols wants to leave a legacy for the next generation of players for Southern.
“We are handing down the torch to the young guys and a win at Mumford confirms that,” said Echols.
Echols and Crockett along with 22 other football players will leave Southern University with a smile on their face.
With this victory it leaves an even win, lose factor at home with 2 wins, 2 losses.
Southern (6-4, 6-2) will now have to travel deep into the heart of the Crescent City for their season finale against the undefeated, Grambling State University at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on November 28.
