On December 7th, three members of the Human Juke-Box Tyran Williams (19), Dylan Young (21), and Broderick Moore (19), were killed by sixty-three-year-old Clyde Gay. According to news sources, the three boys were changing a tire on a 1999 Jeep Laredo on the shoulder of the I-49 highway. Clyde Gay was behind the wheel of the 18-wheeler truck, after drifting into the shoulder of the road, that struck the three boys. Each young man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Soon, Gay was facing three counts of negligent homicide, which involved more than ordinary carelessness and cost the lives of others. On August 29th, Clyde Gay was sentenced and pleaded guilty to all the counts of homicide. Initially, his prison sentence was five years.
However, four of five years were suspended. Gay will serve one year in prison and the following.
four years under supervised probation. His commercial driver’s license was taken away and no
longer allowed to be reinstated. Each family is to receive a total of five thousand dollars each,
along with additional fines.
After being notified of the sentencing of Clyde Gay, one cannot help but be filled with disappointment in the court system for this very light punishment for the death of three young black men. These boys were on the rise of completing their education, enjoying the music they made, not to mention being on the way home for Christmas break. They were killed due to pure carelessness on the road. The boys were positioned in the emergency section of the highway. as they were making the needed tire exchange; however, Gay may have unintentionally struck. the boys but lives that cannot be returned were taken away.
About the sentence, I believe that was quite light considering that Gay must only sit in prison for one year. On the other hand, taking his license away was needed due to his open display of carelessness. Not to mention, the lack of awareness on the road when driving heavy equipment. Lastly, the amount of money that each family will be receiving is far from a deserved amount! Again, Gay killed multiple people. I feel the family members deserve more because the reason why these men are no longer with us is caused by carelessness. Frankly, if Tyran Williams, Dylan Young, and Broderick Moore were white, the sentence would have been nothing less than harsh.
