Greek Life Perspectives took the time to share information with students on campus who are looking for more insight on how they must present themselves. At Southern University A&M, we offer all Divine Nine organizations on campus, which include the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., the Alpha Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., the Beta Alpha Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., the Rho Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., the Alpha Eta Chapter of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc., and the Beta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Darby Smith, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., responded, “Making sure your logistics are good, specifically ensuring your grades are good, being active in the community, and having no record of disciplinary actions are crucial when presenting yourself as a potential member.”
Representation is a key point in any professional setting, and as college students, we must make it a priority to ensure that our personal lives and professional lives are separated. Making a first impression can determine whether or not your desired goal can be reached. Ms. Smith highlighted the importance of being discreet. “Reading the room” is how she described determining the right time to inquire about personal concerns. She described situations to avoid as a courtesy to others. Approaching someone as they are heading to class, while they are eating, at a party, or seemingly in a rush may not be the best time to start a discussion.
When asked about preferred attire, Darby was very relatable. Often, as a college student, professional wear is only necessary during important events. However, professional wear is the desired style. Crop tops, shorts, and T-shirts are not advised. Considering our campus as a professional place, it must be treated as such. Ensuring you are presentable as if you were seeking a professional opportunity is advised. Being selective in your appearance is your best bet. To figure out if an organization is right for you, Darby says, “doing your research and inquiring with the best sources to get more information.”
She explained how she pursued her desired organization during her time in undergraduate school. Doing all the research she could, talking to members of the organization at appropriate times, and consulting mentors of the chapter helped her make her decision. Attending events on campus can also aid in understanding your values and interests. Knowing the basics of the questions you want to ask can help tremendously. By knowing what you want to ask, it may be easier to obtain the needed answers.
