Dr. Jovan T. Thomas, a native of Thibodaux, Louisiana, from a small city located in the Southern part of Louisiana. He graduated from Dillard University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health then later attended Southern University New Orleans, where he earned his Master of Social Work Degree. After attending Southern University New Orleans, Thomas transitioned into Higher Education, where he furthered his education through obtaining an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) Degree from Louisiana State University.
Dr. Thomas also earned his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Educational Leadership & Research with a Concentration in Higher Education Administration from Louisiana State University. Currently, Dr. Thomas serves as the Interim Dean for University College at Southern University and A&M College. Dr. Thomas’s research interests are diverse and extensive, spanning student access and achievement, equity and diversity, student learning and development, and mentoring.
The university leader is also a published author, Master Mason, and a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. When interviewing Dr. Thomas he expressed that outside of working in leadership he takes great pride in parenting his 16-year-old nephew, whom he lovingly considers as his own son.
In Fall 2019, Dr. Thomas served as not only my personal Academic Advisor during his tenure, but for many other undergraduate students. When asking Dr. Thomas could he describe his experience as an Academic Advisor and how did it prepare him for this position, Thomas voiced; “My tenure as an Academic Advisor was profoundly instrumental in shaping my perspective on higher education. Working directly with students, I gained invaluable insights into their diverse aspirations, challenges, and needs. This role allowed me to engage on a personal level, understand academic trajectories, and offer tailored guidance to ensure students remained on the path to success. These hands-on experiences have ingrained in me the significance of fostering a supportive academic environment and the nuances of navigating institutional systems. As Interim Dean, I draw upon these foundational experiences to ensure we create holistic academic strategies, streamline processes, and, most importantly, prioritize the student experience at the center of our decision-making.”
Being appointed in this leadership position can be challenging, furthermore the reality for some students in college, more specifically Southern University, isn’t always color.
In question, Digest asked Dr. Thomas in an interview “How do you envision addressing the unique needs and concerns of underrepresented minority students, particularly at an HBCU?”
In addressing the unique needs and concerns of underrepresented minority students, especially at an HBCU, it’s vital to first understand and acknowledge their distinct experiences, histories, and challenges. An HBCU provides a rich environment that inherently celebrates the culture, heritage, and achievements of Black Americans. To further cater to the needs of these students, we must foster open dialogues, encourage mentorship programs, and provide tailored academic and socio-emotional resources. Furthermore, enhancing collaborative efforts among faculty, students, and the community, and prioritizing inclusivity in curricula, can drive a sense of belonging and empowerment. By doing so, we not only support their immediate academic pursuits but also equip them with the confidence and resilience to navigate and excel in broader societal contexts.
Dr. Thomas thanks and commends any and everyone as he begins his journey as Dean of Students for the University.
