What’s the very first thing you see when you step outside your dorm building or campus.
apartment? Litter.
There is trash everywhere on campus with trashcans overflowing on every corner. Buildings are old, in need of updating with facilities being broken and out of order. It makes one hard to fathom this being the campus we pay thousands of dollars for. I am filled with disappointment when I see the way our campus looks. Even though there are designated campus clean-up Days, those only occur after big events, such as football games, welcome week, or homecoming.
As known by many, the illustrious Southern University A&M campus was built on a hill, which we call, “The Bluff.” Students can go and enjoy this geographic feature north of the JS Clark Administration building where there are gazebos with tables and benches overlooking the view of the Mississippi River. During my recent visit, I noticed a miniature forest growing down on the bank blocking the view, which could prove dangerous and attract unwanted wildlife. My experience at the bluff has not been the most pleasant, possibly due to the abundance of trash and ants all over the tables and the ground. The same would have to be said about the Pavilion located near the Student Health Center. Not to mention the stench, and raccoons enjoying habituating the area. One cannot even enjoy a Subway sandwich without creatures trying to take it.
Concerned student, Isaac Hollingsworth expresses, “I feel like that puts like a bad reputation on our school because we one of the biggest HBCUs in the nation and I feel like that could deter our name and at other HBCUs you don’t really see that.”
Hopefully, sooner than later, Southern will act on these beauty modifications for the sake of our lovely campus.
