The SWAC is one of the most exciting conferences to watch in terms of black collegiate sports. Countless big title games are played within this conference, whether that’s a rival game, homecoming, or even HBCU Classics. Many classic title games are played across the SWAC throughout the season, like the Pete Richardson classic. This is known as the first home game for the Southern Jaguars. You also have the Boombox classic, which is played between Southern University and Jackson State. This is one of the best classics in the SWAC because of each team’s history. These two teams also have a long history, playing each other in an HBCU showdown, which brings out the team’s fans and communities. This game has so much intensity and passion between each other, which makes it one of the best classics played in the SWAC. Every year, in November, two teams from the SWAC meet in New Orleans to play in a highly celebrated game called the “Bayou Classic.” This illustrious game goes back to when Southern and Grambling first started playing each other. Both teams have decorated history within this title game, but only one walks away victorious. This is the best-televised football game during the season because of the attention it brings to SWAC, reflecting Southern and Grambling. The Bayou classic has been a long traditional game in Louisiana between the two schools, which makes the stakes even higher each year. Not to mention, this year is the 50th anniversary of the bayou classics. As we approach November, you can feel the energy in the South. All of us Jaguar fans are looking forward to a show being put on with us walking away as the victor in this year’s bayou classic.
There are several great classics like the Magic City Classic, Boombox Classic, Turkey Day Classic, and State Fair Classic, but nothing compares to the bragging rights of the Bayou Classic.
