It’s show time on the bluff! As the gates at Southern were opened for homecoming, Ms. Jade Jones and friends from the Department of Mass Communication partnered with Hulu. They opened the doors of Stewart Hall Auditorium to an exclusive premiere for “Black Cake.” Black Cake is a Hulu series based on the New York Times bestseller by Charmaine Wilkerson, starring actress Mia Issac.
The challenges the young lady in the film faces are a dramatized version of a similar issue families face today. After speaking with Jones, she expressed her excitement about the impact of the viewing, stating, “The purpose is to raise awareness to the student body on such an impactful [and] timeless story.”
In this film, Issac portrays a young lady named Covey who has lost her mother. In the wake of her untimely death, Covey’s mother left a will and verbal testimony of revealing secrets to Covey and her brother, who appear to have a strained relationship. This audio message unfolds truths about her mother’s past. As Covey attempts to piece together parts of her mother’s story, she struggles with pain, lust, and her principles.
As I made my way around the room, I spoke with a few students, including Roderick Burke Jr., a sophomore at Southern University from New Orleans. Roderick, who appeared on account of a friend, was happy with this opportunity, saying it was “a good experience and effective way to meet new people.” He was also interested to learn what more information the communications department had to offer.
Although everyone was thrilled about the show’s viewing, another attention grabber was “free food.” Skylar Leblanc, owner of The Bayou Effect in Baton Rouge, catered the event. Leblanc presented a variety of delicious Caribbean-style dishes, including Rasta pasta, oxtails, plantains, and more! Even while working hard, Skylar was able to enjoy the event. Her take was “knowledge is power,” and viewing the show would bring “amazing awareness to the culture.”
If the fullness of our bellies and cleared plates weren’t enough to speak to how great the food was, take it from Jazmine Johnson, another sophomore attending Southern prompted to come by recommendation of a friend and see an Instagram post. She and her friend were ecstatic to comment on the amazing quality of the food, and when Johnson was asked how she felt about the event, she commented that it was “entertaining and highly recommended.” She also urges anyone who plans to “bring a friend!”
This premiere wasn’t the first and will certainly not be the last. We can look forward to similar events in the future and find information about these debuts on flyers around campus and the department’s social media page @southernu_masscom. In the coming week, look for the day party advertising the next viewing; you won’t want to miss it!
