The Bayou Classic weekend is a highly anticipated event within the HBCU community. During this weekend, Southern and Grambling students, alumni, families, and friends come together to celebrate the unique culture of HBCUs and spend quality time with each other. The Divine Nine fraternities and sororities are known for their emphasis on familial bonds, and this event allows their brothers and sisters to be together again. The weekend started with the 50th annual Greek Show, an event of great prestige among the Divine Nine.
The Divine Nine is a council that brings together historically African-American sororities and fraternities. Each organization under this council has a significant history and legacy. However, when it comes to seeing who’s the best, the Greek Step Show will determine that.
On Friday, November 24, 2023, right after the 2nd annual high-school Battle of the Bands event, the prestigious and most distinguished Divine Nine organizations from both Southern and Grambling competed in the step show. There were a total of 4 sororities and 4 fraternities performed at the Greek Show. These were the Ladies of:
● Beta Alpha Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
● Psi Beta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
● Beta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.
● Delta Iota Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
As well as the Gentlemen of:
● Gamma Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
● Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
● Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
● Delta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.
Each organization was given a specific time on stage to showcase a themed routine that tells a story. On stage, they perform by using makeup, costumes, and a combination of stepping, chanting, and strolling. This competition is highly anticipated as this is a chance for people to see the Divine Nine in action. With this being the 50th Greek Show, everyone was waiting in excitement to see all the sororities and fraternities’ performances. With the stadium packed out and the crowd turned up from start to finish during the show, this was one for the books.
The 50th annual Greek Show winners were none other than the Beta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the Beta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. The Beta Sigma Alphas had a GodFather theme with a seamless step performance, as the Beta Alpha Sigmas had a Men in Black theme entitled “Poodles In Blue (P.I.B).” The Beta Alpha Sigmas had a tone of acrobatic tricks in their step performance, with one of the highlighting moments being a poodle hanging upside down. There was no surprise that both of the winners of the Greek Show were from Southern University.
Both teams had put in a lot of effort to prepare their routines for the Greek Show. Southern University’s Gold and Blue dance team even showed up with some of their alumni and performed a dance before the show began. It was a fantastic night with great performances by all of the Greek organizations. Congrats to both the gentlemen of Beta Sig and the ladies of Beta Alpha at Southern University for their outstanding performances and wins.
