The biggest and most anticipated game of the year was just hours away, as Southern and Grambling fans gathered outside the Superdome for the 50th Bayou Classic Game. On November 25, 2023, alumni students, families, and friends gathered at Championship Square to enjoy the ultimate pre-gaming event, Fan Fest, before the big game. With over 40 vendors giving away free items and offering various activities, everyone had a great time. Attendees could do multiple things like play video games, buy Southern and Grambling gear, buy food and drinks, explore internships, scholarships, and job opportunities with Fortune 500 companies, and network.
As you entered the heart of Championship Square, the main stage came into view. On the main stage, various DJ performances and celebrity appearances highlighted the stage. DJ Poppa and DJ Keith Scott played some hits while people were walking around, and then there was a line dance break with GameOva Skip. Then, there were some musical selections by Daniel Heartless, Subtweet Shawn, Treety, and headliner Boosie. When Boosie took the stage, he gave the crowd a show that they would never forget. People walked around, got free stuff, socialized, and did line dances. It was definitely a vibe.
The atmosphere at the event was loved by students, alumni, and families alike, as it made them feel right at home, which is exactly what the HBCU family culture is all about. “I loved all the free stuff I got, and I had a great time doing some line dances with my crew and seeing others enjoy themselves. It really embodied the HBCU family culture, which I love,” said Asiah A’moree, a junior at Southern University.
Fan Fest was the highlight of the lead-up to the game, bringing together Southern, Grambling, and HBCU fans and students from across the region. It was a celebration of the rich culture and traditions of the HBCU community, creating a sense of unity and belonging among one another. It’s not just about the game but the experience leading up to it. The Bayou Classic Game is a tradition that has been passed down for generations, and for its 50th year, it was time to celebrate the culture, history, and pride of the HBCU community in a more significant way.
The Bayou Classic Game was a much-awaited event that gathered the community, alumni, and students of Southern and Grambling universities. The annual game is one of Louisiana’s biggest events, attracting people from all over the nation. The festivities kicked off at Championship Square, a hub of excitement with a wide range of activities and freebies. Visitors enjoyed live music, food trucks, and a variety of vendors selling everything from clothing to souvenirs. It was a great opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones while indulging in the vibrant atmosphere of the Bayou Classic Game. There was something for
everyone, and the event was full of blue, gold, red, black, and yellow. The Bayou Classic Fan Fest featured live musical performances to get the crowd warmed up before kick-off at 1pm. This event was free, open to the public, and started at 9am.
