As the football year winds down, many students, faculty, and alumni have concerns about the future of Southern University Football. Head Coach Eric Dooley has coached the football team since December 2021. Since being promoted to Head coach, Dooley has made very questionable decisions. The decisions make me ponder, “Does Dooley know
what he’s talking about?” I feel like favoritism is the leading factor to why the team isn’t doing well. Every time I watch the game, I shouldn’t be seeing the same players just thrown in, not knowing what they’re doing. All these talented players are playing the waiting game when it comes to the field and jeopardizing our SWAC Title. In my opinion, the football team needs a new coach who will utilize them to the fullest. The quarterback position is vital, and no productivity is present. I know I’m not the only one that agrees. Earlier this year, there was also a petition going around about hopefully removing Dooley’s position as Head coach. Many people have requested that he be replaced. With being Head coach for only two years, the football team’s stats haven’t been the best, and I hope this doesn’t affect their SWAC title in the future. Not to mention, Dooley is only 12-10, has never beat Jackson State, or Florida A&M, and has been shut out in several conference games. Dooley is known as an “offensive guru,” but the offense has struggled to score for the second consecutive year. From the looks of it, keeping Eric Dooley around just might put the football team at risk. It is time that Southern moves on from this Dooley era. The talent is there for Southern, but it is not being executed or displayed on Saturday. In addition, our recruiting has taken a hit because of what is displayed week in and week out. As we can see, Eric Dooley is not living up to these high expectations he has raved about. Eric Dooley does not make the adjustments necessary, and oftentimes, he wraps himself, resulting in disappointing outcomes.
