Dressed to impress, students attended the career fair this semester in hopes of securing their future. Among 110 recruiters, 50 were recurring companies looking for juniors and seniors who possess the potential, skills, and knowledge to join their teams.
A few students discussed their expectations and goals for the career fair. Drake Davis, a senior civil engineering student, shared his insights. «I expect to meet Lockheed Martin, Trimble Macorthy Inc, ExxonMobil, and Enterprise because my future goal is to sustain an internship for the summer. After the internship, I shall receive a co-op, so I can work and go to school at the same time. That way when I graduate I will work full-time with the company after I graduate.»
Senior, computer science major, Loran Gaines discussed his future goals and his expectations for the career fair as well. Gaines responded, «Well I currently work for DXC Technology, so my goal is to promote myself. I want to branch out and see what opportunities are available for me. I am hoping to meet with Locket Martin because they have a branch in my hometown Orlando, Florida.»
Kierra Gasper, a junior business management major, discussed her future goals and what she expected from the career fair. Gasper responded, «From this year’s career fair, I expect employers to tell us what they are about; as well as professional development within the company, and not just offered a job. My future goal is to hopefully be working with a company that is at the college career fair today. I hope that I’ll work in HR (Human Resources) at one of their departments or a corporate lawyer.»
In addition to speaking with students, a few companies from the career fair shared their expectations. Joe Duel with ExxonMobil responded, «We look for students who have a minimal GPA of 3.3-3.5. We look for students who have experience in the discipline of mechanical engineering. They need to have an understanding of thermodynamics. They need to transfer chemical engineers to understand the basics of organic chemistry. Just basic skill sets they should have as they matriculate their education here [Southern University].»
Taylor Barnes, a recruiter from Cargill discussed, «We’re looking for students who are interested and have a background in agriculture, business management, and engineering. Cargill is an agricultural plant. We’re one of the biggest private organizations in the US. We focus on food. Our motto is, «We Feed The World.» For example, the corn syrup used in Pepsi and Coca-Cola products are from Cargill. Mcdonald’s also works with Cargill. The ingredients in the food people consume will go through one of these plants within the US.
With high expectations for both students and recruiters, this career fair was unlike any other.
