Bill S. 686 also known as the TikTok bill has been funneling between the House of Representatives and the Senate for almost 2 weeks now. This bill essentially is over what is protected by the first amendment, such as our basic rights of freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and the right to petition. However, republican politicians are currently pushing this bill as a way to protect the country from “espionage” and “harvesting data of Americans” and I believe that is bullshit.
We have way more problems in this country that need to be solved than worrying about an app that people dance on. Personally, I think that this bill is just the government’s way of trying to control its citizens even more than they already do. If they can push this bill to be formally signed in both the house and senate, then the government’s restrictions won’t stop there, it will continue to magnitudes we as citizens aren’t even ready for.
Next, all social media will be banned, we will have to log the number of hours we spend on our cellular devices, and we will need trackers to make sure citizens aren’t a threat to national security. All in all, the possibilities are endless.
I wholeheartedly believe that this push to ban tik TikTok is also rooted in xenophobia. After World War 2, tensions between the United States and the People’s Republic of China have been spiraling into a red zone of uncertainty. Time and time again we see people of Asian descent in this country get scrutinized for absolutely everything, for instance, Covid-19, simply because our country sees them as a threat. This ban seemingly just pushed the anti-Asian rhetoric republicans have been trying to make stick for decades.
So, to conclude, banning TikTok is a waste of time and should be the least of worries for this country.
