On February 11, 2024 – Beyoncé Giselle-Knowles Carter didn’t hold back putting the world into a chokehold during her Verizon, Super Bowl LVIII commercial. The commercial led you through the “Queen Bey’s” evolution of accomplishments to clever marketing releases of her debut album singles, “16 Carriages,” and “Texas Hold ‘Em.” Not only did she release these singles, Beyoncé and her team ended the commercial with the release date of Act II leaving critics and fans with suspicion of a Country Album.
Fast forward, weeks before release day, March 29, 2024 – Parkwood, Beyoncé’s Entertainment Company releases the album name, future merch, and everything, “Cowboy Carter,” on March 12th. Now your probably thinking, why would the celebrity to celebrities do such a thing when she’s already established in her discography?
According to her press release via. Instagram caption,
“It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied OUR rich musical archive.”
“Our” in this context is directed to black and brown folks.
“It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history,” stated Beyoncé.
Without being bias and stating facts for better context, the 42-year-old Virgo is known to express her emotions and experiences just like most successful artist exhibits through their music. Back in 2016, during her “Lemonade” era, Beyoncé was invited to perform for the CMA’s (Country Music Awards) where she experienced harsh backlash, death threats, for just doing her job.
The controversial trial of events fumed Queen Bey to clap back and remind the country lovers and rebels that she will reclaim her reparations as a black woman. And she did just that.
Beyonce addressed that it took her 5 years to complete the 27 track album, “Cowboy Carter.” The Bey-hive, Beyoncé’s biggest supporters, took to various social media apps acknowledging the level “petty,” and “intention,” that she puts into this project.
Regardless of whenever you’re reading this, let’s just take a moment to digress how the Houston-bred artist created a “Three-Act Project,” making historical breakthroughs. Meaning, whilst her Act I, “Renaissance” Era was evolving – she was preparing to release Act II.
Nonetheless, Act II, “Cowboy Carter,” is out whereas Act III, which is unknown post publishing – is already completed and in sync with the other two Acts.
Beyoncé makes it very clear, that “Cowboy Carter,” isn’t a country album. That is is a “Beyoncé” album. From the unique track titles, utilizing the roman numerals and keyboard symbols – to the storytelling implications from the score of musical elements from of pop, opera, house, jersey club, classic rock, hip hop, blues, soul, rock, rhythm and blues, zydeco, bluegrass, fado, go-go, funk and folk!
If you search and play, “Just Kickin’ It,” by Xscape and skip to 2:31 – the incoming lyrics express who this album was made for.
My advice to you is to take the time and dive into the meaning and essence of each track from 00:00 until the end. Really pay attention to the lyrics, the producers who help mold each song, and the homage Beyoncé made room for.
You can dislike Beyoncé, her art, and her message – but you can never say she doesn’t break records or make history. And that’s facts!
