In the midst of Now You See Us: Junior/Senior Week 2024, all eyes were watching for the Miss Thicker Than a Snicker pageant to see who would snatch the coveted title. On February 28th, 2024, members of the Junior and Senior Class Cabinets held this competition in the University Event Center. This pageant is one of the most anticipated pageants of the year as four young women came together to provide an evening of fun and entertainment while also breaking stereotypes in front of the student body.
As everyone gathered in the event center at on Wednesday night, the crowd was filled with signs from family and friends out to support the lovely ladies of the pageant as they took on the intense competition. When the first round began, the ladies set the standard for the rest of the competition. It was clear that this title meant very much to all the young women who partook as you could see the fiery passion in each of the competitors’ eyes taking the stage. Beginning in the crowd, the contestants made their way through the audience and performed their fierce opening dance routine before introducing themselves to the judges and spectators.
Throughout several rounds, the ladies of the pageant went out of their way to prove why they should be crowned the title of Ms. Thicker Than a Snicker. Heist themed, each round presented a new challenge as contestants showed off their style and grace in categories such as Prettiest Wednesday and the White-Collar Crime category. In another category, contestants spiced it up, sending waves of excitement through the crowd as they showed off their best beachwear attire to the judges and audience. In the fourth round, the ladies were able to show off their talents, from dance routines, poems, and the entire campus singing along to the Dreamgirls soundtrack, the audience was on their feet cheering and praising each young lady of the pageant. After a brief intermission from DJ Neff to keep the crowd on their feet, the contestants made their way to the stage to answer one final question. This question was used to test something other than beauty or talent, and that is the contestant’s intellect and character.
After serious deliberation and the final walk from former Miss Thicker Than a Snicker 2023-2024, Jasmine London, the judges made their final decision. Kierra Daniels, a Sophomore from New Orleans, Louisiana was crowned as the 2024-2025 Miss Thicker Than a Snicker. “When I won, I was shocked and super grateful because I’ve worked so hard on this pageant. The feeling was very pleasing seeing all my hard work not go unnoticed! I am super excited to have won,” Daniels said.
“To see the pageant come to life from start to finish was truly inspiring to me,” stated Jaria Hunter, Junior Class Chief of Staff and pageant coordinator. “I wanted this pageant to be different from typical pageants at Southern University and I was able to achieve just that. The contestants faced every challenge head on and I was able to tap into my choreography side which is something that I am passionate about. I was thoroughly proud of how the pageant came to life.”
Saraa Abdullah, a junior majoring in Nursing and current Junior Class President shared similar sentiments, saying, “This pageant was about more than the music, dresses, or beauty, it was about self expression and the contestants feeling confident in who they are… the Junior and Senior classes are happy to have played a part in seeing their growth during our week.”
Through a night of fun and competition, the message remained that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes in the end. “Miss Thicker Than A Snicker means a plus-sized or curvier woman who is comfortable in her skin. She is beautiful on the inside and out and always walks humbly with her head held high!” said Daniels. With her grace, Southern University can’t wait to witness this queen’s reign.
