Mental health has always been an unspoken topic within the black community. From an overwhelming number of classes to financial instability, college students’ stressful lives and schedules surely call for a constant mental caress. College students have been complaining about the University’s lack of care for their mental health. In late June of 2022, schools began allowing students’ mental health to be a valid excuse for absentee. Soon enough, mental health days became highly requested by college and high school students. To be able to witness Southern University taking notes of the student’s wishes and implementing something that could not only allow room for better performance from students but also serve as a pass as a genuine gesture from the University, as it shows that our mental matters. Southern University’s first Success & Wellness Day, with calming events scheduled from 11 am-3 pm, took place.
The student body, as well as the administration, was granted freedom during the time frame to focus on oneself. Students had the option of visiting the counseling center, indulging in yoga, workouts, meditation, a wellness expo, or even staying inside and self-isolating. As students gathered in the Union Courtyard, the aura of the campus seemed light and airy. Yoga mats were dispersed alongside the sidewalks, and in the grass, and students were taking advantage of the much-needed, soothing experience. SGA President, member of the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, and graduating Senior, Brandon Horne expresses, “The process that was taken to ensure the perfect day was a challenge. This day is something I have been wanting to implement since the beginning of my campaign, and the administration has been more than supportive.” Many students express their appreciation for the Wellness Day on Southern University’s infamous social, Sidechat. Anonymous commenter posts, “I took this day as a time to wash, dry, and fold clothes as well as clean up around me. I haven’t been able to get to anything since being swamped with school. Thank you, SU.” Not only did the Wellness Day have different mental exercises, but they also had interactive games, such as the Gratitude Board, which the Junior and Senior classes hosted. It allowed students to write positive notes to themselves and others.
Jordan Williams, the 93rd Miss Southern University A&M College, shares, “The reason why we are doing this is to impact the students positively. This day is to help the students focus on improving their mental health. There are a lot of stresses that come with being a college student so, knowing how to balance everything including emotions, is very prevalent.” In conclusion, mental health days play a crucial role in the gentle and genuine preservation of mental well-being in this fast-paced, and stressful rock we call the world. In today’s world, mental health days are imperative. They prioritize self-care, reducing stress, and facing mental health issues head-on. By continuously incorporating mental health days into our routine, we can ensure a culture of mental well-being. SU did it first!
