It’s that time again, Jags! Football season is officially less than one week away, and the anticipated season under new head coach Eric Dooley will begin. It’s been almost a year since the Jaguar Football team last played a game under former interim Coach Jason Rollins, and Jaguar Nation is predicting an exciting upcoming 2022 season.
Ending the 2021 season, the Jags had an overall tough season. Southern was ranked 4th in the SWAC Western Conference with a 3-5 conference record and overall 4-7 record. Starting this season, Southern has three players named to the 2022 HBCU Preseason All-American Team and seven Jaguars selected by Phile Steale for the All- SWAC Conference Teams.
On December 7, 2021, Eric Dooley was introduced as the Jaguar Football program’s 20th head coach. Coach Dooley is no stranger to Southern. From 1997 to 2010, he served as a member of the famed Coach Pete Richardson team at Southern. He assisted in leading the staff to the 1997 and 2003 HBCU National Championship and the 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2003 SWAC Championship for the Jags. Coach Dooley is returning to The Bluff after 4 seasons as head coach at Prairie View A&M where he led the panthers to the 2021 SWAC Championship and proceeded to win the SWAC Western Division Championship ending with a 7-5 record.
Not only is Dooley the new face of the team, but he has also inquired a new coaching staff to work with him in the upcoming season. The majority of his new coaches have either followed him from his former school, Prairie View, or have previously either played or coached for another school in the SWAC Conference. “I think it’s a very strong staff… guys that I know well and who know Southern,” Dooley said.
The Jaguars will hit the field for the first time on Saturday, September 3rd right here on The Bluff against Florida Memorial University at 6:00pm. This game will be followed by the highly awaited gamed against the LSU Tigers at Tiger Stadium on September 10th.
