Dressing to impress is a staple of the Southern University culture, and formal occasions never being too far away, Southern University’s Career Services department partnered with the JC Penny to dress Jags for the occasion, which just so happens to be Southern’s annual Career Fair this week.
For over a century, JC Penny has been an affordable outfitter for businessmen & women, lawyers, and numerous other professionals, including organizations founded by minority communities.
This past weekend’s sale comes in lieu of this years Career Fair that’s set to take place on Southern University’s campus on February 23, 2022. The Career Fair is an endeavor organized by Career Services yearly with the intent of exposing the student body to potential employment and internship opportunities.
In honor of Black History Month, the clothing conglomerate has made dozens of affordable deals available at its Baton Rouge location with the aim of properly outfitting as many Southern University students as possible.
On this past Sunday’s sale, students were offered60% off discounts that could be applied to any professional attire. The event was attended by dozens of Jags as they looked to upgrade their wares. The sale includes full suits, dress shoes, ties, blazers, dress shirts, and much more.
Additionally, another recent seasonal addition to JC Penny’s black history programs includes the Hope and Wonder 2022 Black History collection, an assortment of affordable professional and leisure wear for black girls and women of all ages. This particular collection was inspired by the corporation’s close work with Black Girls Smile, an organization that provides mental health
education, resources & support for young
African American women & girls.
Among those in attendance, Southern University’s Career Services also had a presence at the event that was spawned primarily due to their longstanding partnership with JCPenney.
“The Suit-Up Event is perfect for our Jaguar students because it prepares them for their careers and and puts their best dress and best foot forward so that we can present the pride, excellence, and tradition that we possess,” said Francesca Simmons, program coordinator at Career Services.
“Our partnership will grow because we have been consistently partnering with JCPenny and we also encourage students in the Law Center and Alumni to join us as well. We have already started working with the JCPenny Corporate Office and local store to plan the Fall 2022 Suit Up Event. We are excited to host this event each semester to kick off our career week activities,” said Tamara Montgomery, Director of Career Services regarding the latest joint venture between JCPenney and SU Career Services, as well as when their next event can be expected to take place.
With the Career Fair taking place on the 23rd, this past event is just one example of the larger partnership that has existed between Career Services & the clothing conglomerate for years past and should endure for years to come.
