Wi-Fi is provided for the SU Student body faculty and staff has been inaccessible in some areas on campus for about two weeks. With the Wifi connection being down students have experienced missed deadlines, assignments and emails. Many students have expressed that the campus technology is not up to pamakes it extremely difficult to keep up academically. Freshman biology major, Kelsey Leal, from Slidell currently resides on campus and feels that Wifi access should be easier. “The wifi should have easier access and better quality,” said Leal. “All dorms and surrounding areas on campus should have a wifi connection that it is easier for us to reach, so that we can perform to our fullest potential while here at school,” finished Leal. With the constant wifi complaints students also complained of the constant pop-ups that require students to sign into the school’s wifi using their school username and password. Senior criminal justice major Charlisha Bradford from Covington said, “I don’t like signing in and out. I prefer to sign in once and automatically connect when I’m in the area,” finished Bradford.
Assistant Director of University Baton Rouge’s Division of Information Technology Alvin Allen gave insight and made it clear that he is aware of the task at hand. “Recently an additional wireless controller had been purchased in case the primary controller goes out students won’t lose access,” said Allen.
Allen went on to express the reasoning of why students have to constantly sign in to use the wifi. “To enhance the security the university changed the system back to where users had to login using their SUBR username and password,” said Allen. Allen wants the student body to know that the department is well aware of the issue and are taking proper procedures with hopes of allowing students to have a better internet connection. In Closing of the interview Allen assured that the university has purchased a back up controller and about 80 additional access points, improving coverage. Installation should take about a month according to Allen.
