The Horace G. Moody Intramural Complex was the place to be on Monday, September 22. Students and faculty filled the stands to watch a team of SU male students battle it out against the infamous Street Ball Kings.
Who were these guys anyway? Going back ten years, Hype Man Theo, then employee at Def Jam, wanted something different for himself, so he partnered with his late friend, Kevin, and created the Street Ball Kings at Howard University where celebrities would come and play basketball and showcase their skill in Slam Dunk contests or three-point shootouts. Theo then took the Street Ball Kings to the next level by traveling to other HBCUs in other regions of the United States. After a successful run in America, the Street Ball Kings went global. Ten-year veteran of Street Ball Kings, Pat the Roc, mentioned that he has been to 25 different countries.
Arriving at SU the Street Ball Kings were, prepared to show out with tons of dunks, trick plays, and extreme ball-handling skills.
In the first half, SU students showed major skills and keeping up with the Street Ball Kings every step of the way, tying the score 43 to 43. The basketball court was not the only place showing some basketball skills. Students in the audience tore up the floor with some serious dance moves as Kool DJ SupaMike played the hottest songs. There was also a dance contest with a 100 dollars cash prize. Freshman Computer Science Major and King of Jig, Donovan Poole, danced his way to the prize!
Halftime was a show in itself. Volunteers from the crowd participated in the three-point shootout, and first-year member of the Street Ball Kings member, JT, and three players from Southern’s team, Marquon, Erin Jordan, and Joshua, battled it out to be claimed winner of the Slam Dunk contest. Marquon claimed the title with an out of this world dunk.
After a very entertaining halftime, it was time to get back to business. SU and the Street Ball Kings made the last 15 minutes something that everyone in the gym would always remember. Pat the Roc blazed the court with his intricate ball handling and smooth shots from all over. He even put a few players on their backs, making the crowd go wild. He was unstoppable, clenching the 95 to 92 win for the Street Ball Kings.
Marihica Sterling, Freshman Nursing major from Minden, Louisiana, showed her excitement and appreciation for the event. “I like the fact that we can come together and hang out in a fun environment to celebrate our Homecoming,” said Sterling. This was a great choice for our school,” finished Sterling.
Senior Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Study Major Erin Jordan, who played with the Street Ball Kings due to a shortage in players, agreed with Sterling., “This event was very beneficial and had a great turn out! I’m glad the students participated.” Finished Jordan.
