I know a lot of y’all didn’t watch the Oscars this past Sunday, but I did. And I’m not going to lie, I wish I didn’t. Yeah, I’m proud of some of my favorite actors that won, but overall? I’m irritated. Because how does the biggest movie of 2025, a Black cinematic masterpiece, only win FOUR awards out of sixteen nominations? Four? Let’s be for real.
Sinners wasn’t just a movie, it was an EVENT. That film had folks running back to theaters like it was a concert tour. Clips still going viral, edits all over TikTok, think pieces every other day, this movie really had the nation in a chokehold. And y’all mean to tell me that only deserved four awards? Oh, okay.
Delroy Lindo? ROBBED. That man had people crying in their seats. He wasn’t just playing some old, drunk musician, he was portraying a whole generation of Black men dealing with pain they don’t even know how to talk about. No award? That’s crazy. And Wunmi Mosaku as Annie? Don’t even get me started. She carried wisdom, emotion, spirituality, she was the glue of that movie. And somehow she lost too? I’m sorry, but in my opinion… she acted circles around everybody in that category. But that’s just me.
The technical side? Yeah, I’m confused. The makeup, costumes, visuals everything was TOO real. I was there thinking the vampires actually biting folks. The details were insane. The time period? Perfect. Ryan Coogler did not come to play, and somehow movies with half the creativity walked away with awards instead. I’m not understanding. And the soundtrack?? Don’t make me mad all over again. Every song hit. Then they threw Rod Wave on there like… come on now. That’s culture.
Now Michael B. Jordan did win Best Actor, and don’t get it twisted, he deserved that. Playing two completely different people? Changing his walk, his look, even wearing different shoes? Yeah, that man ACTED HIS BUTT OFF, but the way the rest of the movie got treated almost makes it feel like they just threw him the award like, “Here, take this and be quiet.” Because if y’all really believed Sinners was THAT good, it wouldn’t have stopped at four wins.
I’m just saying, I’ve only scratched the surface. That movie meant something. The level of Black excellence, on screen and behind it, was undeniable whether the Oscars want to admit it or not. Ryan Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Miles Canton, everybody involved deserved better. Sinners might’ve been robbed at the Oscars, but everywhere else? Especially in the culture? We know what that movie was really worth.
