The concept of an African woman saying she was going to gather as many African Americans in one spot and bomb them because her aim was to kill us all? The diaspora wars between African, African-British, African-American, and Caribbeans need to stop. While every subset of Black people has their own culture and yes it is beautiful: Afro Beats come from mostly Nigeria and Ghana in Africa. Clothing style such as the “Y2K” trends and “Streetwear” trends came from African Americans and more.
For me, as an African American woman, I don’t understand. It’s always mostly the war between Africans and African-Americans with disrespect coming from BOTH sides. The argument is “African-Americans don’t have culture!” as if African-Americans weren’t apart of the blueprint in America? The style, the music, the food, it all comes from Black America. The whole argument of “Africans live in huts and shoot darts” like there aren’t many rich and lavish areas in African countries with beautiful architecture? The real question is, when did these “diaspora wars” even start and what’s the point? What’s the prize? The best Black?
It confuses me because, not only are people on both sides acting like they’re better than the other, it confuses me because at the end of the day whether you’re from Barbados, Ghana, America, or the UK, a racist person will still call you the same slur. A police officer will still shoot you down based on your skin tone having just a little more melanin. We’re so caught up in arguing with ourselves and we’re forgetting that our ancestors were all colonized by the same three major countries.
What prompted me to even write this piece was going back to my original sentence about the African woman wanting to “Gather all the foundational Black people (African Americans), strap a bomb to her chest, and blow us all up” and she’d be doing the world a “favor”. And then proceeded to say Happy Black History Month to all black people EXCEPT African Americans. And it’s just baffling and embarrassing that we’re fighting amongst ourselves like this. Who’s “better” because at the end of the day we’re all Black AF. Whether you’re Louisiana Creole, Zulu, from the Islands, or British we are all black people. We are still hated by almost the rest of the world because of our skin color, you think a racist will stop and ask you where you’re from first before calling you a slur? NO! So all of this threatening of our community, yes OUR community together, needs to stop. At the end of the day we all need to be on one accord and need to love and accept each other first before we can fight back against the discrimination brought forth to us.
