With the intention of ensuring students are well prepared for professional development and excellence, Southern University A&M College has welcomed its first chapter of The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) to its campus. As the largest honors society in the nation, NSLS is known for emphasizing career readiness and leadership preparation for college students across the United States. After 24 years, Southern University A&M College makes a space for itself within this legacy.
After joining, students gain access to member-exclusive scholarship opportunities, leadership training programs, and networking events designed to connect them with professionals in their respective fields and fellow members nationwide.
As the organization values student engagement, Chapter Secretary Cameron Robinson focuses on event coordination.
“I serve as chapter secretary, overseeing all organization meetings and membership events,” Robinson said when asked about his responsibilities within NSLS.
Jaquae Jolie, newly appointed NSLS Southern University Chapter President, also shares insight on how she plans to influence the organization.
“My role is centered around leadership development, accountability, and creating meaningful opportunities for student growth on campus,” Jolie said.
The organization wants students to know that GPA is only a small part of a larger picture. While NSLS appreciates high-achieving students, the organization also aims to engage with students who may doubt their abilities or question whether they qualify for a spot in an honor society.
“My goal is not only to support the students academically but to create an environment where they are equipped with leadership skills, professional etiquette, and confidence when networking,” Jolie stated.
The student body has also expressed interest in the new direction NSLS plans to take Southern University. Sophomore Political Science major Dontrell Martin, a nominee for the organization, shared his personal definition of leadership and hopes for the future of NSLS.
“I define leadership as a thing that requires the person to be able to take charge but also be able to listen and give advice.” He stated.
Martin believes that with support, NSLS has the potential to unite students who are committed to both academic excellence and community service. “I think NSLS could impact Southern in a positive light by bringing together a group of honor students to be able to give back to our campus while still here.”
Through engagement with students, effective training, and confidence in the next generation, the SUBR chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success will diligently work towards its goal of aiding college students in becoming their most successful selves.
