For many recent college graduates, the search for a first job stretches longer than expected. Degrees alone no longer guarantee a job in a competitive market where connections and experience often open more doors than résumés. To bridge that gap, career fairs are becoming an essential stop for young job seekers.
Career fairs play a crucial role in helping students bridge the gap between college and the professional world. They offer a chance to meet recruiters face-to-face, ask questions about career paths, and make connections that often lead to internships, fellowships, or even full-time positions. For many students, especially those without established networks, career fairs provide an accessible entry point into industries that may otherwise feel out of reach. At Southern University, these events have become a cornerstone of career development, giving students a structured space to practice professionalism, explore opportunities, and gain confidence in presenting themselves to employers.
Southern University is preparing for its Spring 2026 Career Fair, an event that continues to serve as a major gateway for students seeking internships, fellowships, and early career opportunities. Each semester, the fair attracts more than 30 employers, including organizations such as ExxonMobil, IBM, Entergy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Ochsner Health, companies that routinely recruit Southern University students for roles across engineering, business, technology, and public service.
“Take the time to research different companies you’re interested in working in,” said librarian Vanissa Gosserand, emphasizing the importance of preparation.
As students prepare for the upcoming career fair, many are turning to campus leaders for guidance on how to make a strong impression. Carl Nixion Jr, a Graduating Senior majoring in Business Management and president of Minorities in Sports, lives by the motto, “Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready.” He stresses the importance of keeping résumés and portfolios updated and treating every day as an opportunity by dressing and behaving professionally. For the career fair, he emphasizes business‑professional attire, proper hygiene, and the power of a strong first impression. He also notes a helpful tip for students: JCPenney offers a 30% discount each semester.
Students also shared words of encouragement for their peers preparing to attend the fair. Cierra Campfield, a Management Major and Graduating Senior, emphasized the importance of grounding yourself in your values, reminding students to “Stay true to who you are and to pour into those who pour into you!”
Sophomore nursing student Siniaya Harvey added practical style advice, encouraging attendees to “Stay covered, stylish, and appropriate. Stay confident and professional. Wear shoes that are comfortable and easy to walk in for a long time. In other words, ‘comfortable, yet classy.’”
As students prepare to step into rooms filled with opportunity, their shared advice reflects the spirit of Southern University: confidence, authenticity, and excellence. With guidance from peers who have walked the path before them, attendees are encouraged to show up as their best selves and make meaningful connections that can shape their futures. In addition, students should arrive prepared: bring multiple copies of an updated résumé to ensure every conversation counts. This year’s career fair is preparation, professionalism, and pride in who you are, which will always open doors.
