Southern University students now have the opportunity to explore the business side of sports with a new Sports Marketing program, which will included a Sports Marketing minor and concentration. The program, combines marketing strategies, brand management, and promotion in the sports industry, designed to give students a competitive edge in a field that continues to grow nationally. Dr. Jones, Marketing and Management professor, stated the minor was added to provide students with new academic opportunities and career pathways. “This program gives students a nationally competitive option in sports marketing,” Dr. Jones said. “Our students will be well positioned to effectively lead in this space. It’s an exciting addition that complements existing majors and prepares students for careers in a dynamic industry.”
While many students are excited about the new option, some expressed mixed feelings about the timing. Jalen Robertson, a senior majoring in Business Management, said he wished he could have taken advantage of the program himself. “I just feel sad because it’s being added right after I graduate,” Robertson said. “But I do feel good for students who are passionate about sports. It’s a great opportunity for them to explore something they love and gain experience in the process.”
Even students outside of the marketing field acknowledges the minor as a positive step for the university. “It’s exciting to see the university create paths for students to follow their dreams,” Robertson expressed. Kayse Pettus , an accounting major, said she’s glad that students who enjoy sports will now have an academic path tailored to their interests. “Even though I’m an accounting major, I’m happy that students in marketing who enjoy sports can pick a minor that aligns with their passions,” Pettus said.
The new program reflects Southern University’s broader commitment to expanding opportunities for students and preparing them for real-world careers. For students interested in both sports and business, it offers a chance to combine their passions while learning practical skills that could lead to careers in team management, brand promotion, sports analytics, or event coordination. For many students on campus, the addition of the program is more than just another academic option it’s a signal that the university is listening to their interests and adapting programs to match the evolving job market.
