Tenth Annual Pre-Law Day Activities
The Southern University Law Center will host its annual Pre-Law Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, February 7, in A.A. Lenoir Hall, with law center administrators, faculty, staff, alumni and current students on hand to meet prospective students. Participants will receive information on admissions, financial aid, career decisions, academic support services and campus involvement. The activity also will include a tour of the law center. Art Exhibit
The Smith-Brown Memorial Union and River Road African American Museum and Gallery present, “Civil Rights Moved Here.” The collection features photos from the Greater Baton Rouge Civil Rights Movements. The exhibit will be on display February 4-28 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the student union lobby.
Research Enhancement Program
The Undergraduate Research Enhancement Program (UREP), a Title III program administered by the Graduate School, is looking for students who are interested in enhancing their opportunities for admission to graduate studies at Southern University or any other institution. The students will participate in a series of seminars and workshops designed to enhance their verbal and quantitative skills. Also, students will receive study materials at no cost and take the GRE at no cost. Participants must be classified as a junior or senior. Literary Society Activities
The SU Literary Society invites everyone to attend its spring semester activities, which include book reviews, a lecture series, and a readers’ series featuring local and regional authors reading their works. Book reviews will be held February 11, March 18, and April 22. The lecture series on “Freedom in a Global Society” will be held January 30, February 6 and 13, and the Readers’ Series will be held February 12, March 19, and April 23. All scheduled events will be held in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union form 7-8 p.m. For more information call Dr. Jo Ann Marx at 771-2870.
Founders Day 2003
Festivities for Founders’ Day 2003 will be held during the week ending March 7, with the Annual Convocation being held at Seymour Gym. This year’s theme is – “Southern University: A Lamp Still Burning. All 20, 30, and 40+ year personnel will be honored at the Annual Service Awards Luncheon. All vice chancellors and department heads are encouraged to contact the Office of Human Resources to confirm the names of departmental or divisional personnel who may be eligible for this recognition. All students are encouraged to enter the Poster Design and Essay Competition. The criteria to enter the contest includes – A.) Must be currently enrolled at SUBR. Old State Capitol To Host Black History Month Events
Secretary of State W. Fox McKeithen proudly announces that Louisiana’s Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge will be observing Black History Month by hosting a series of discussions concerning the role of African Americans in politics and government. Each week in February, the Old State Capitol will welcome a different speaker to address the public on a prominent issue. The schedule is as follows:
Thursday, February 6 – 9:30-10:30 a.m. – History of African-American Politicians. Guest Speaker: Dr. Charles Vincent (Southern University) – Dr. Vincent will give a history of politics as it affected African-Americans.
Thursday, February 13, 9:30-10:30 a.m. – Get Out the Vote! How?. Guest Speaker: Kip Holden – Holden will discuss methods of encouraging greater participation.
Thursday, February 20 – 9:30-10:30 a.m., Redistricting-Does it Work? – Guest Speaker: Cleo Fields, The importance of redistricting and fair representation will be discussed.
