In the past, several black television shows centered on the black family have graced the screens of their viewers. Those including, The Cosby Show, A Different World, and Family Matters. Comedic shows also have a place in the spotlight. For example, The Jamie Fox Show and Cedric the Entertainer Presents. Today, they seem to be popping up in round numbers causing the primetime selection to grow.
The black television shows of today seem to focus mainly on family, morals and the growth of relationships. One show that offers a prime example of this is My Wife & Kids, starring Damon Wayans and Tisha Campbell-Martin. The two play the parents of three, Claire, Junior, and Kady Kyle, played by Jennifer Nicole Freeman, George O. Gore II and Parker McKenna Posey. They struggle with growing pains, academic issues and life’s lessons.
The Bernie Mac Show adds an interesting twist to family life. Bernie Mac plays himself with Kellita Smith as his wife, Wanda Mac. He battles daily with young Jordan, played by Jeremy Suarez who has trouble staying out of mischief. The sassy Vanessa, played by Camille Winbush, constantly keeps her Uncle Bernie stressed. She’s convinced that she can never let her guard down for fear Bernie will catch on. The precious, innocent princess, Bryana is played by Dee Dee Davis who seems to be Bernie’s favorite.
Cedric the Entertainer hosts a new variety show, similar to that of Saturday Night Live, and Mad TV, called Cedric the Entertainer Presents. This show consists of skits jam-packed with comedy and relief that is sure to keep its audience laughing. Some major actors and actresses also star in this hilarious television show. The show includes Wendy Raquel Robinson, best known for The Steve Harvey Show, Canadian comedian, Shaun Majumder, and Lake Charles native and star in the 2001 movie, Pretty Cool, Amy Brasette.
Other shows include UPN’s One on One based on the relationship between a single father and his daughter, starring Flex Alexander and Kyla Pratt.
Also, the Disney Channel’s That’s So Raven, starring Raven Symone.
