A quick search of the thesaurus could find no other words to describe Southern University’s continued hold on the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball team. The 2003 team, voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors, has seven of thirteen first-team spots claimed by Jaguar players. Of the five “Best Of” categories, Southern claims or shares all five positions.
Leading the Jaguar parade of honors is junior infielder Rickie Weeks. Weeks was named 1st team at second base, Outstanding Hitter and was a unanimous repeat selection as “Player of the Year.”
The other “Best Of” categories saw Southern pitcher, Duwon Day selected “Outstanding Pitcher”, outfielder Andrew Toussaint was tabbed “Newcomer of the Year” and “Freshman of the Year” honors was shared by SU’s Jonathan Kohn and Alcorn State’s Tory Bates.
On the 2003 All-SWAC first team Southern picked up seven positions. Prairie View A&M and Mississippi Valley State had two players, and Alabama A&M had one player selected.
