With hands raised, voices lifted and intentions for their high praises to reach heaven, the Christian Hip-Hop X-plosion set it off for Christ.
The Committed to Christ (C2C) student organization held it’s second annual Christian Hip-Hop X-plosion, themed “Settin’ It Off For Christ” on April 11. in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union Cotillion Ballroom.
It featured several gospel rap groups and soloists, including the Soulja Boys IV Christ from Baton Rouge and the Men of God from New Orleans. The groups performed inspirational forms of gospel rap.
The groups were diverse with foundations from various churches and Christian organizations, but all had the common goal of giving God praise.
“My freshman year, there was a Gospel X-plosion in the Minidome and I enjoyed it, but this year there’s a different feel. This celebration was a good way to get students involved,” said Portia Thomas, a junior microbiology major from Houston.
The C2C student organization has been in the works for three years. It is a Christian group that focuses on serving as a spiritual bridge between students’ academic and spiritual lives and setting out to reach young people of different cultures, backgrounds and denominations.
The organization provides a support group, a mentoring program and spiritual counseling for all religions. They also participate in various community service projects.
“We are not asking students to turn away from their own denominations, but to bring the body of Christ into the oneness that He really is. That is what inspires us,” said Minnie Fountain, faculty advisor.
The audience consisted of Southern University students, faculty and parents. Most of the attendees enjoyed the program, including high school students that were excited to be there.
“I feel that the performance was really good because we all were uplifting Jesus Christ,” said Brandon Harris, a sophomore at Belaire High School.
