The development of the SU Ambassador Student Recruitment Program is one of the critical tools for increasing the number of student applications and enrollment. This program was first organized during the fall of 1995 by Southern University’s Office of Admissions. It was incepted due to the increase in other recruitment activities and the limited professional staff.
Currently the SU Ambassador’s body is made of 35 volunteer students. Their mission is “to assist prospective students and their parents in demonstrating how Southern University and A&M College can provide high quality academic and social environments.”
The prerequisites to be an ambassador include only the desire to give a valuable volunteer service and go through an interview. Then the ambassador goes through orientation prior to his/her involvement with prospective students. The major and classification does not matter.
“I enjoy being an ambassador. I meet new people, and I feel like it is my way to give back to Southern,” says Robert Johnson, a junior psychology major.
Guided tours are given to interested people at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Many civic groups and organizations visit the campus, where they will receive a presentation, a tour and the opportunity to purchase items in the bookstore and in some instances, dine in Mayberry Hall, the food court in the Union, or Dunn Hall.
“The SU ambassador student recruitment program is very important because it helps prospective students to learn first hand how campus life would be at Southern University,” says Chrisena Williams, SU Admission’s Office recruiter at SU.
