Students from Southwood Middle School visited Southern University last Friday for Student Athlete Day.
Starting off with a breakfast that included a welcome by SU Athletic Director Floyd Kerr, the students were allowed to escort various student-athletes to class.
“It was fun walking with the kids,” said Jags junior second baseman Rickie Weeks. “It reminded me of when I was in middle school.”
After receiving a touch of the “college experience,” the middle school students got a chance to tour SU’s athletic facilities and met with strength and conditioning coach Danny Morris.
Henry Thurman, SU’s resident campus architect gave the students a tour of the F.G. Clark Activity Center or the “Minidome.”
“It was fun to show the kids around and show them what we are doing at Southern,” said Thurman. “Who knows, by the time they get here, they will have remembered places such as our famed Minidome and then, they will be able to experience other changes here at Southern.”
In the Minidome, the kids from Southwood also got to see the brand new men and women’s locker rooms, restrooms, scoreboards and sound systems. Afterwards, they went to the football stadium to tour the press box and suites.
As the lunch hour fell upon the group, they were guided to Mayberry Dining Hall. They topped off dessert and the rest of their day by being guests of the Jaguars softball team.
The kids watched the Jags as they played the Tigers of Grambling State University. As they watched Southern sweep the Tigers in a double header, the tourists reflected on their day at Southern.
“I liked the classes and the lunchroom. They have nice people here,” said Arika Butler, a student at Southwood.
While students like Butler enjoyed the classes and Mayberry Hall, others like Southwood student James Augustus enjoyed the student-athletes.
“It was good, I had fun talking to the football players,” said Augustus.
“The day was really fun!”
