Pure comedy, an all-star cast and a superb plot all come together to form the movie Head of State.
Comedian Chris Rock makes his directorial debut and stars in this ridiculously funny movie that describes the life of a Washington D.C. alderman who just happens to be picked to run for President of the United States.
Rock is Alderman Mays Gilliam, a man who suffers from losing his job and his fiancée (played by Robin Givens, who soon wants Gilliam back), only to regain happiness soon after.
The untimely death of the Democratic Party’s most important candidate leads to the search for a new frontrunner for Presidency.
After being seen by Debra Lassiter (played by Lynn Whitfield) a Democratic advisor, he is chosen to be prepped for the limelight of candidacy.
Unknowingly, Gilliam is set up by Democratic officials to compete in a race he is not supposed to win.
Gilliam immediately feels like a puppet attached to strings because he is told how to talk and think.
After becoming frustrated with the rules and the setup of his campaign he takes the advice of his brother Mitch Gilliam (played by Bernie Mac) and begins to think and speak for himself.
To add to his truly honest campaign, he picks his older brother as a running mate for vice-president.
Even though the two don’t know much about politics nor the rules and regulations of campaigning, they possess a quality that other candidates do not… they genuinely care about people.
With the combination of comedic buffoonery, stereotypical phrases and the famous slogan “That Ain’t Right,” this movie is sure to leave audiences wondering if it is just entertaining or painfully offensive.
The humorous dance scenes, the non-stop antics of Rock and Mac and the common shout of security made Head of State a truly enjoyable film, which used comedy to tackle real issues plaguing the working-class and all nationalities that feel the government does not care.
For Rock’s first attempt on directing, he deserved a pat on the back for making a movie that showcased a fictional black man with smarts, charisma and care for his community.
Rock also proved that he is more than just a comedian and great actor, but also a writer.
Others on the cast include Tamala Jones, Dylan Baker and narrator, rapper Nate Dogg.
