Grambling State University (20-22-1 overall, 15-13 Southwestern Athletic Conference) only scored ten runs in the twenty eight innings played at Lee-Hines Field against the Southern University Jaguars baseball team (38-5 overall, 27-1 SWAC) last weekend.
In the Jaguars’ 38-run binge (including 13 in the final game), Southern avenged a Grambling squad that had the claim of being the only SWAC team fortunate to defeat them.
On March 15, in the second game of the Sunday doubleheader in Grambling, the Jags succumbed to uncharacteristic mistakes that allowed the Tigers to defeat them 6-5.
However, on April 19, head coach Roger Cador’s squad did not stop avenging their defeat with the 3-0 shutout in the first game.
The Jags did not stop at avenging their only conference defeat at the 6-2 win over the Tigers in the second game on the 19th. Nor was not satisfactory for the Jags to avenge their loss to their conference rival by beating the Tigers 6-2 in the first game of an Easter Sunday doubleheader.
The last game of the Easter doubleheader provided solace for Cador and his squad in the 13-4 crucifying of the Tigers.
“It’s always good to avenge a loss, especially the one we had at Grambling,” said Cador. “We played better. We didn’t play well defensively and we had 12 batters left on base up there…Usually when you correct those things, you are going to come out ahead.”
In Tuesday’s doubleheader against Loyola University, Southern came out smoking with a 5-0 win over LU.
However, in the second game, the Wolfpack went on to get 12 hits in their 8-0 win over the Jags.
Southern is now preparing for their final regular season matchup with the Panthers of Prairie View A&M. The weekend doubleheader will be held at Lee-Hines Field starting on Saturday at 1 p.m.
