Approximately 45 persons applied for the position that Southern University men’s basketball head coach Ben Jobe will vacate at the end of the summer and now only three have a chance of getting the job.
On Tuesday, the search committee that had the task of recommending the new coach relayed the three names to SUBR Chancellor Edward Jackson and he will make the final decision.
Dale Valdery, the current assistant coach was one of the names chosen, along with Southern alum and current Grambling State women’s basketball coach David “Rusty” Ponton. Michael Grant, the current coach at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, rounds off the list of coaches.
Although the basketball team has no clue of who will be their next coach, two high school players have committed to play for Southern.
Jerimie Collier, a 6-2 shooting guard from Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Natchez, Miss., signed a letter of intent with the Jaguars on National Letter of Intent Day (April 16).
Joseph Jack, is a 6-9 baller from St. Louis High School in Lake Charles and signed his letter of intent also.
Although Valdery is being considered for the coaching position, he is still focusing on his current duties.
“Everything went well,” said Valdery. “I am sure they will make the right decisions, but we also must focus on recruiting and preparing the kids for the upcoming season.”
