In the commotion of the elections, we may have lost focus on what we need in a Student Government Association president. Things like experience, leadership ability and most importantly the ability of action. So whom do I support for SGA President? I thought about it and I came up with this:
Mary K. Sims is the most experienced of the candidates. Sims has served in SGA for the past three years. She knows the SGA inside and out. Though Sims definitely possesses the experience, I am not so sure if her leadership qualities are very strong. She has ideas for changing SGA, but what happened to the past President’s ideas?
In most cases, these ideas meant nothing. If you stick with Sims, you will have the same problems that SGA has had the past two years. Things did not change while she was in office. Despite her experience, are we willing to give her a fourth year to ignore the issues at hand?
Kia Smith is another candidate, though she doesn’t have as much experience as Sims does. Also, she has little on her platform, but to say the least she certainly is an enthusiastic campaigner.
“Taking Crime Away From Campus” is one idea on her platform. Let’s get real Smith, if the President of the United States can’t take crime away, do you think you can? Perhaps that was just a typo on your flyer. Reducing crime would have been more appropriate, but even then, that is beyond that realm of SGA President.
Jonathan B. Campbell appeared out of thin air. Isn’t he spreading himself a little thin?
He gets major points for working and providing for his family, but Campbell also has obligations to his fraternity. With all this on his plate, I must say that the Presidency could be too much.
The focus should be the student’s needs. Too many focal points may cause what I call political schizophrenia. He’s occupied by too much to give his all to SGA.
Another candidate that appeared out of thin air is “Avery’s Puppet”-James “JJ” Slaughter.
Where did he come from? Has he served SGA previously? No. Maybe, he volunteered with the SGA just to get his feet wet. No.
Well, what has he contributed to be so confident that he is fit to be PRESIDENT? Nothing-he is just Avery Wilson’s political “running mate.”
Slaughter forgot about starting from the bottom and working to the top. Though, for the past three years he has diligently focused on his studies, it took three years to get his GPA the way he wanted. So how long is it going to take to get SGA right? Three years?
Sarcasm is of Slaughters attributes, but Slaughter can also dance. He danced around questions at the debate like he was in a Sean Paul video. By redundantly rebutting with his infamous line, “I believe your question is…”
He is simply a politician-a politician with Wilson’s backing and no experience. That is deadly combination. Two traits you don’t want in a president.
So whom do I endorse as SGA President?
Wayne J. Haydin.
He handled himself with poise. He attacked all issues head-on and answered every question honestly-not like a politician. So Haydin is white. Should that make a difference in the political arena? No, we need the best person for the job.
Whether black or white, male or female, it shouldn’t matter. Haydin is a man of action and that is what we need. Action-not someone that will sit on their hands and do what they’re told.
I said it. Wayne Haydin for SGA President! If you want action, vote for Haydin.
The perfect team would be Haydin and Sims as his executive assistant.
Now we could live with that combination.
