With elegance, beauty and charm Kyana D. Stewart, Miss Southern University 2003-04 has proven that she is indeed worthy of representing Southern University.
She shined the entire night at the annual Miss Southern pageant held April 10 in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union, where she used her gracefulness to win the competition.
Besides the judges of the competition, the student body also felt she deserved to be an overall winner by awarding her with 943 total votes.
“When the votes came in and I realized I won, I was initially shocked, then I immediately thanked God for helping me,” Stewart said.
The 20-year-old junior is the daughter of Wilford and Diane Stewart and is a native of Houston. She is majoring in chemistry and biology and is maintaining a 3.4 grade point average.
Stewart wants to make sure that Southern is always represented as an institution that deserves to be respected, during her reign as Miss Southern.
“I hope to present myself as an ambassador that exemplifies the dignity and intelligence that best personifies our university. I hope to not be a spokesperson, but a trailblazer in the area of community service which is most vital to our local youth,” said Stewart.
Stewart knows that hard work will pay off in the future and has plans to continue her pursuit of higher education.
“After graduation I want to get my Ph.D. in toxicology and attend an institution that specializes in research on inhalation toxicology. I also want to work in the pharmaceutical industry and disease control,” Stewart said.
Stewart realizes that students supported her campaign and for that she is grateful.
“I want to thank every person who voted for me,” said Stewart.
