The Southern University Lady Jaguars bowling team went to Las Vegas as the 24th ranked Division I bowling team in the nation. They left Las Vegas with a fifth-place finish in the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships West Sectional.
The Lady Jags finished the competition with 11032 pins (172.38 average) in 64 Baker games. Southern finished 777 pins behind the West the West Sectional winner and the second ranked team in the nation, West Texas A& M.
“We did very well, the team gave it there best, but we didn’t quite do the job. The lane conditions were tough, but I am proud of the way our ladies competed,” said Karen Couvillion, SU bowling coach.
“There was very tough competition and as a team we did well. We worked together and all our practices came together. We did our very best,” said junior Leigh Buickerood.
In addition to Las Vegas, the IBC Sectionals were held March 22-23 in Downingtown, Pa., Louisville, Ky., and St. Louis.
The top four men’s and women’s teams in each sectional advanced to the 2003 Intercollegiate Bowling Championship to be held in Tulsa, Oklahoma on April 23-26.
