The Southern University men and women’s golf teams are getting into the swing of things as they prepare for the 2003 Southwestern Athletic Conference Golf Championship Tournament, which will be held April 14-17.
The Lake Windcrest Golf Club, located in Magnolia, Texas (suburban Houston), will be the site of tourney and both teams are looking forward to fare better than the third place wins they both received at last year’s tournament.
Although the Jags watched the Tigers of Jackson State and Texas Southern place first and second place, respectively, in last year’s tourney, SU golf head coaches Willie Williams and B. Ferdinand are not swayed.
“This year we expect our women competitors to represent SU well,” said Williams. We expect great things from juniors Cassie Jemison and Annie Tu, and sophomore Danielle Sells.”
Among the three ladies, standout freshmen Nicole Joseph, Josephine Ainley, and Brittny Brian are expected to do big things. Seniors Brian Njorge and Peter Ndungu are expected to lead the men’s team in the tournament.
“With great effort from both teams, we should finish at the top of the SWAC championship,” said Williams.
After the SWAC Championships, the women’s team will be preparing to head to Atlanta to compete in the National Women Collegiate on April 23-26. Both teams will then travel to Port St. Lucie, Fla., where they will compete in the National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund Tournament on May 1-4.
