To every thing is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
My season as the SGA president at Southern University is finally complete. My life has been touched, changed, revived, and renewed. Not only was I responsible for the students here at Southern University, I had to represent all the students at the other 29 institutions in the state of Louisiana. By seating on the Board of Regents, I was the voice for more than 220,000 students. My input on the Board of Regents and roles as SGA president gave me the experience to impact many lives in a positive manner.
Even though I had to play duo-roles, my obligations to Southern University students were first. My staff and I had the opportunity to change history on this campus in more than one-way.
The first historical moment was during Homecoming. Homecoming has always been an experience in itself. This past year, the homecoming concert took place in the Riverside Centroplex on October 10, 2002. This was the first time in Southern University history that a concert had to be off campus. However, with your support and patience, the concert was a success. The concert will go down in SGA history as the one to top.
The next historical moment was the approval of visitation, On March 28, 2003, the Southern University Board of Supervisors finally deemed this tireless fight for visitation acceptable. We fought many hard battles but gain victory in the war. Visitation will start effectively this coming Fall semester.
Finally, the last historical moment will occur on April 26,2003, Springfest will have a different approach. MTV and BET will be in attendance. MTV will turn Springfest into a carnival of excitement and fun while BET will capture it on film for the new reality show. Fabolous will bring the heat while ICE-T will bring the knowledge.
Overall, as my tenure as SGA president, so many different people have brought a new definition to my purpose in life. (1) Thank you Mr. Terral Jackson, SGA advisor. You were more than just an advisor. You were a motivator, counselor, and most of all, a friend. (2) Thank you “Four Pillars”, Lena Williams, Barthlomew Claiborne, Makela Steward, and Marcus Coleman. Without your support, I could not have stood the trying times. (3) Thank you Miss Southern University’s Court. It was an honor to be apart of a court that was well respected. To Erica, you will always have that fire and please continue to blaze with your lovely personality. To Alexis, it was an honor to serve on the court with my baby sister. I will always love you. (4) Thank you Chancellor Edward Jackson. I have learned to be a leader just by watching you. Thanks for your encouragement and advice. I will always cherish it. (5) Thank you Dr. Raymond Downs. I could always depend on your guidance when I had to make hard decisions. (6) Thank you jaguar ROTC battalion. Jaguars FIRST !! (7) Thank you Mr. Wilburt Jones. The support you gave me kept me focus. I will always keep our hometown Oakdale close to my heart. (8) Last but not least, thank you students of Southern University. Thank you for believing in me and having faith in me. You have made a country boy dreams come true. Without you, my life as president would not exist.
