The two-day Davenport-Milburn Pelican State Relays started with a presentation to the familes of Southern University’s legendary Olympic heroes Willie Davenport and Rodney Milburn and ended with the Lady Jaguars track team taking first place and the men tying with Grambling State for first place.
“I must say that this is best Pelican Relays I have seen and I have been around to see many. I really think it had a lot to do with the changing of the name and the women who organized the meet,” said Johnny Thomas, Sr., SU men and women’s head track and field coach.
At Roscoe Moore Track in A.W. Mumford Stadium on the SU campus, fans saw the Lady Jaguars win 48 points and the men shared its first place crown with Grambling earning 53 points.
Junior Francella Williams placed first in the 100-meter hurdles and went on to place second in the 400m hurdles with the time of 61.57 seconds.
In the 100m dash, sophomore Henry Frazier placed second with the time of 10.89.
“The hurdlers really performed well which was great because the men honored were great hurdlers, said Thomas.
Senior Jamie McLendon placed first in the 110m hurdles and Joseph Shelton placed first in the 400m hurdles.
