The Southern University men and women’s tennis teams retained the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship last Saturday earning an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament.
Jeff Conyers, head coach for the men and women’s team, expressed his satisfaction with his team’s advancement with a wide grin.
Both teams reached their victories against the Alcorn State University Braves. The Lady Jaguars beat the Lady Braves 4-3, after earning a doubles point, which sealed their victory.
The Jaguars however, played closely in doubles action but secured their 4-3 win, by taking control in their singles matches.
“We hung in there. We stuck together,” said sophomore Kelli Nabors, describing the final match against Alcorn State.
Having played teams that were ranked highly in national polls all season, Conyers feels his teams will fair well against their next opponents.
Aside from his teams winning the SWAC championship, Conyers also was selected as SWAC Coach of the Year for both men and women squads.
“It still hasn’t hit me totally yet. It’s a really good feeling to win at your university, your alma mater,” said Conyers.
Southern will not know which teams they will be facing as of yet. The results of the NCAA regional tournament bracket will be televised April 30th on ESPNews.
