Over the course of the season, the Southern University men’s basketball team (9-20) has lost several games in the same fashion: the Jags are usually up ahead with a comfortable score and within a few minutes of play, costly errors cause them to relinquish the game.
Such was the case on March 11, when the Jags played the Panthers of Prairie View A&M University. A one-point loss prevented the Jags from reaching the semifinals of the SWAC tournament in Birmingham last weekend. In the 56-55 loss to the Panthers, the Jags gave Prairie View a good fight, leading them at the half 32-28, but just were not persistent enough.
“We didn’t execute in the end and they did. We turned the ball over in the last five minutes of the game, and they stepped up and played,” said Jaguars sophomore guard Trayvean Scott. “We had the game plan and the people to execute it and we fell short in the end.”
Prairie View scored 11 points off turnovers and their bench scored 16 points whereas SU bench only scored four. SU shot 21 of 38 from the field and made 7 of 9 free throws.
