The women of Southern University’s intramural basketball team are going to Disney World! The team earned a trip to the resort by winning a regional basketball tournament sponsored by the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
The women had to defeat the University of Central Arkansas and the University of North Carolina in order to reach the finals. The team comprised of Kasandra Woods, Mariah Tatum, Alisia Cardoza, Felicia Gray, Jennifer Robertson, Tiesha Wilson, Crystal Vallair and Sophia Gordon defeated the host team, ULM 34-31 in the finals.
The men came close, but failed to defeat a University of Texas A&M-Commerce team in the end to win the finals. Southern eliminated the University of Central Arkansas 35-30 and unknotted an end-of-regulation tie to beat Angustana College 66-59 in overtime.
Louisiana Tech gave SU a scare, but not enough to prevent them from defeating Tech in overtime 73-65.
The game against UT-Commerce proved to be a game that SU just could not win. Southern lost the game 75-69.
Team members include James Flowers, Cory Banks, Roderick Ambrose, Adrian Wilson, Chris Haynes, Kwasi Lewis, Will Clark, Kendrick Rogers and Kirk Stansberry.
These triumphs add to the reasons that SU Director of Intramural Sports Melvin Robinson feel that more attention needs to be directed to intramural sports.
“Intramural sports is an essential part of student life at Southern University,” said Robinson. “It is unfortunate that the intramural budget is not enough to support the program. The students do extremely well, but they should not have to fund their own trips to represent the school, but nonetheless I very proud.”
