I was privileged to have the most compelling conversation with a young lady a few days ago. We were talking about several things when our conversation veered towards the beauty of black women. I myself am not partial to any shade of women but I do find it easier to find beauty in the souls of black women. So I asked myself why are they so beautiful to me? Surly there are other races that can be as beautiful. I thought to myself why is their beauty different from the others?
The black woman with her chocolate skin, true they come in different shades but chocolate nonetheless, full lips, beautiful curves, and rhythmic movements, whether walking or standing still there is a rhythm to her elegance. But that didn’t quite satisfy the question fully. What is it about black women that made them more appealing?
First, I realized that though at a disadvantage in American society, black women tend to triumph over the odds of most stereotypes. In the past, black women have been looked upon not just the weaker of the species, but more specifically the weaker of the race. Afterall, the black woman is facing the double whammy effect. If a black man gets pass being black and excels in society, he is okay. In the instance of the black woman, she must first face being a woman and then she must face being a black woman, and not necessarily in that order. In the past, this has stagnated the black woman, but she has pressed on to become the beautiful creature that we see on a daily basis.
The black woman has proven to empower her man. Now I know that the fellas are thinking “Is this dude for real?” yeah brothers I said it! As the saying goes behind every successful man is a brilliant woman. I am aware that black women get a bad reputation because of those that stray from the context of my article. To those, and you should know who you are, deal with it. I am talking to those beautiful black sisters with the right things going for them. Continue to do your thing. Even if your efforts go unnoticed for a while, trust me the right brothers are watching.
The black woman, along with the their beauty are becoming more educated than ever before. The ratio of female to male students here at our university is evidence of this. The ratio of highly educated men and women has been said to be as small as sixty men available for every one hundred women. There are nearly 400,000 more black women in higher education and the are now earning more than sixty-three percent of all college degrees awarded to blacks. I noticed that the same women that I find so appealing are beautiful, and they also have their heads on straight and are obviously going places. More power to y’all.
The black woman is looked at as something to be liked by outsiders. Black women are blessed with the genes that others wished that they had. Now those that have not been blessed with those genes run out and pay lots of money for lip injections and breast enlargements. The black woman is most cases been bless with these things and never think of this as an advance in beauty, but it is.
However, even with all that said I still couldn’t put my finger on that one thing that made me find black women so appealing.
Maybe it is because black women are forever changing and can not be defined with finality. Black women are beauty the way that they are- with the noses, lips and shapes that god gave them. Two- black women are black women and must be appraised by the standards of our race. Three- black women are beautiful because of the array of colors that are the many shades of black. Chocolate by any other name is still chocolate. Finally, there are things not physical. The black women is joy. The way that she laughs, calls a bluff, the wholehearted, whole-bodied way that she moves. I can’t think of anything more beautiful. Yeah that must be it. Black women are beautiful because of these things.
Again, more power to the sisters that have the right thing going for them. I can’t image anything better.
Black beauty is in the soul of the beholder. The editor and chief of Ebony magazine so eloquently put it, “There are elements of the beauty in every Black woman that speaks with particular force to particular men who were called by their Creator to testify to this beauty of that particular combination”.
Now even though this article is intended to give praise to the black women, I fear that there will have an adverse effect in some cases. There is no doubt in my mind that after reading this article that there will be an outbreak of females with massive heads swearing that they are the best thing on the planet. So this must be said CHECK YOURSELF! Don’t let a massive ego be the reason that your veer away for the true context of this article.
